  • Two-tone spikes: dark purple below, sky blue above
  • One broad leaf per plant
  • Flowers in April
  • About 15–25 cm tall
  • Tolerates sun and partial shade, naturalises

Muscari latifolium is the two-tone grape hyacinth: the lower flowers are a deep dark purple, the upper ones light sky blue. Instead of many narrow leaves, each bulb forms a single broad leaf. A species with plenty of character in April, also for partial shade.

About this variety

Muscari latifolium comes from the pine forests of Turkey and has been known in gardens since the 19th century. The species stands out for its two colours: the fertile flowers in the lower part are so dark that they look almost black in some lights. Above them sits a tuft of light blue, sterile flowers.

At about 15–25 cm tall, it is ideal for naturalistic plantings in orchards, beneath trees and at woodland edges. It flowers reliably even in partial shade. Together with yellow daffodils or tulips it creates a strong contrast. At the border edge or in the rock garden it looks best in small groups.

The flowers are popular with bees. The species naturalises well and forms large, natural colonies over time. The two-tone effect is particularly lovely in the vase. Voles and deer generally leave grape hyacinths alone. It is one of the most distinctive grape hyacinths and has received a high award for garden merit.

Planting

The planting season runs from September to November. Set the bulbs 5–8 cm deep, tip upwards, 5–8 cm apart. In a lawn it is best to lift a piece of turf, spread several bulbs underneath and press it back down. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Only cut back the foliage once it has yellowed. In pots, water moderately while the plants are sprouting and flowering. Do not mow meadows and lawns until the leaves have died back. After a few years you can divide groups that have become dense.
