  • Hoop-petticoat shape with a widely flared cup
  • Cream-yellow, later ivory white
  • Fine, grass-like foliage
  • Dwarf, about 10–20 cm tall
  • Flowers in March and April, early for bees

'Arctic Bells' is a hoop-petticoat daffodil with a flower like a small pleated skirt: the widely flared cup dominates, and the narrow petals form only a delicate star. The flowers open cream-yellow and turn ivory white. It is dainty but robust and flowers in March and April.

About this variety

Narcissus bulbocodium is called the hoop-petticoat daffodil because of its shape. On 'Arctic Bells' the funnel-shaped cup is large and flared like a bell skirt, while the narrow, pointed petals almost disappear. The flowers open a soft cream-yellow and lighten to ivory. The foliage is fine and grass-like, and the plant flowers for several weeks.

At about 10–20 cm tall it belongs right at the front: in the rock garden, at the border edge or in bowls and pots. The small flowers look best in larger groups. Good partners are crocuses, glory-of-the-snow or small Iris reticulata. A sunny, well-drained spot best matches its origins.

The early flowers are visited by the first bees. In suitable soil 'Arctic Bells' multiplies and returns every year. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. In exposed areas, plant it in a sheltered spot or in pots that do not stay wet in winter.

Planting

Plant the small bulbs from September to November, about 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart. The tip points upwards. A sunny, warm spot with very free-draining, rather sandy soil is ideal. In heavy soil, add gravel or sand to the planting hole.

Care

After flowering, let the fine foliage die back before removing it. In summer the bulbs prefer to be fairly dry. Keep pots out of the rain in winter. If the groups become too dense, divide them in summer. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
