'Diamond Ring' is a small hoop-petticoat daffodil with bright yellow, funnel-shaped flowers. This Dutch selection of Narcissus bulbocodium subsp. obesus flowers very freely above thin, dark green foliage. With 100 bulbs you can plant rock gardens, bowls and lawns densely. A small treasure for connoisseurs.

About this variety

Hoop-petticoat daffodils owe their name to the wide, flared corona, which recalls an old-fashioned skirt. In 'Diamond Ring' the flowers are small, funnel-shaped and strong yellow. The actual petals are narrow and barely stand out. The plant stays dwarf and forms fine, dark green leaves from which many flowers rise.

At around 10–20 cm tall, it belongs in rock gardens, along low bed edges and in bowls. Planted in large numbers, as with this pack of 100 bulbs, it creates a yellow carpet. Combine it with crocuses, glory-of-the-snow or its white sister 'White Petticoat'. A sunny, well-drained spot matches its origins. Between stones and gravel the bulbs warm up in summer, which does them good.

The early flowers offer the first bees a small source of food. In the right spot, 'Diamond Ring' naturalises and returns every year. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. In exposed locations a sheltered spot or a pot is safer.

Planting

Plant the small bulbs from September to November, about 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart, tip upwards. Choose a sunny spot with very free-draining, rather sandy soil. Loosen heavy soil with gravel or sand.

Care

Let the fine foliage die back after flowering. In summer the bulb needs a dry rest. In winter, keep pots out of the rain so that the bulbs do not rot. Divide dense groups in summer. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
