  • Round, funnel-shaped flared corona
  • Bright yellow single flowers
  • Fine, grassy dark green foliage
  • Dwarf habit, about 10–20 cm tall
  • Flowers in March and April

'Golden Bells' is the classic yellow hoop-petticoat daffodil: its round, flared corona recalls an old-fashioned hooped skirt. The bright yellow flowers stand singly on fine stems above grassy foliage. At around 10–20 cm tall, it is ideal for rock gardens, bowls and the front of a bed.

About this variety

Hoop-petticoat daffodils look quite different from the familiar trumpet daffodils. In 'Golden Bells' the wide, round corona dominates, opening downwards like a skirt. The narrow petals are barely visible. Each flower stands singly on a fine stem, and the foliage is narrow and grassy. The strong yellow colour shines from afar.

At around 10–20 cm tall, it belongs at the front: in rock gardens, along low bed edges, in bowls and pots. With 50 bulbs you create a small yellow carpet. It looks lovely with its white sister 'White Petticoat', with crocuses or with grape hyacinths. A sunny, well-drained spot matches its origins in south-western Europe.

A few stems fit a small glass on the table. In the right spot, 'Golden Bells' naturalises and returns every year. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. In exposed locations, a sheltered spot or pots that do not stand wet in winter are safer.

Planting

Plant the small bulbs from September to November, about 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart, tip upwards. Choose a sunny spot with very free-draining, rather sandy soil. In heavy soil, mix gravel into the planting hole.

Care

Let the fine foliage die back after flowering. In summer the bulbs need a dry rest. In winter, keep pots out of the rain. When the groups become dense, divide them in summer. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
