  • Double hyacinths in mixed colours
  • Lush, full flower spikes
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Flowers in April
  • Strong hyacinth fragrance

This mix brings together double hyacinths in various colours. The individual flowers carry extra petals and make each spike particularly lush. With 25 bulbs you can plant a colourful, fragrant spring bed or several large pots.

About this variety

Double hyacinths have individual flowers with several layers of petals. This makes their spikes look denser and rounder than those of single varieties. This mix combines various shades, so each group looks a little different and creates a lively picture.

At about 25–35 cm tall, they belong at the front of a bed, in borders and in pots. Plant the bulbs in loose groups so that the colours mingle. Suitable companions are white or yellow daffodils, grape hyacinths and violas. In a bulb lasagne pot, put the hyacinths in the middle layer, with tulips below and small bulbs above.

The fragrance is strong and sweet, so just a few plants will scent a seating area. In a vase the heavy spikes last well; support them with a small stake if needed. In the garden double hyacinths flower again in the following years, a little more loosely but reliably. With 25 bulbs you can plant two to three large pots or a bed of around half a square metre.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, pointed end up, 10–15 cm deep and 12–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with loose, free-draining soil is ideal, as waterlogging makes the bulbs rot. Wear gloves when planting, as the bulb skins can irritate the skin.

Care

Remove the withered flower spikes, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. In pots, water moderately and avoid standing water in the saucer. After a few years you can dig up dense groups in summer and replant them elsewhere. Hyacinths can irritate the skin; gloves protect you.
