  • Double, globular flowers approx. 10 cm across
  • Two-tone: lilac centre, fuchsia-pink edges
  • Strong fragrance
  • Flowers from June to October
  • Awarded gold in Baden-Baden

'Blue River' is one of the most fragrant lilac hybrid tea roses. The double, globular flowers are lilac-mauve in the centre and fuchsia at the edges. They appear again and again from June to October and are excellent for the vase. A rose for anyone who loves unusual colours.

About this variety

Its colour makes 'Blue River' unmistakable. The double, globular flowers measure around 10 cm and show a soft lilac inside that turns to fuchsia towards the edges. They often open in small clusters. The fragrance is strong and sweet. The variety was awarded a gold medal in Baden-Baden.

At about 80–100 cm tall and 60 cm wide, this hybrid tea suits rose beds, borders or a large container. Silvery foliage such as cotton lavender or lamb's ear, white clouds of baby's breath and catmint complement its colour. Plant it near a path so you can enjoy the fragrance as you walk past.

As a cut rose, 'Blue River' is a special gift. Cut the stems in the morning when the buds are starting to open. Thanks to the long flowering season from June to October, you have a supply for the vase all summer. Even a single flower in a slim glass fills the room with its fragrance.

Planting

Plant the bare-root rose from October to April, as long as the ground is not frozen. Stand the roots in water for a few hours beforehand. Set the graft union about 5 cm below the soil. The spacing is 30–40 cm. A sunny spot and loose, loamy to sandy soil are ideal.

Care

Water evenly, directly at the roots if possible and not over the foliage. Feed in spring and again after the first flush. In spring, cut the shoots back to three to five buds. Remove faded flowers so that new buds follow. The rose is hardy in Switzerland; in exposed locations, earth it up a little in late autumn.
