  • 2–4 flowers per stem
  • Petals pale yellow, later ivory white
  • Orange cup with a golden-yellow halo
  • Intense, sweet scent
  • Flowers in April, about 30–40 cm tall

'Beautiful Eyes' is a scented Jonquilla narcissus with two to four flowers per stem. The petals open pale yellow and turn ivory white, with a small orange cup surrounded by a golden-yellow halo in the centre. Its scent recalls gardenias and makes it a favourite daffodil for the vase.

About this variety

The name fits: every flower of 'Beautiful Eyes' has a striking eye. The small, flat cup is strong orange and is surrounded by a star-shaped golden-yellow halo. The rounded petals open light yellow and lighten to ivory. The colours vary a little depending on the weather. It was bred in the USA as the first white and orange Jonquilla.

At about 30–40 cm tall it suits borders, path edges and pots. Plant it where you walk past so you can enjoy the scent. Lovely companions are blue grape hyacinths, orange tulips or the fresh shoots of peonies.

It lasts a long time in the vase, and a small bunch scents the whole room. It is perennial and naturalises over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Bees find little on it.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. The tip goes upwards. A sunny to partly shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. For pots, use a light compost with drainage.

Care

After flowering, leave the foliage until it yellows. You can remove faded flowers. Water pots regularly while in growth. Divide dense clumps after a few years. In the vase, daffodils release a slime that harms other flowers, so stand the stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
