  • 3 or more flowers per stem
  • Golden-yellow star-shaped flowers of about 6 cm
  • Darker, bowl-shaped cup
  • Sweet jonquil scent
  • Vigorous variety, flowers in April

'Garden Opera' is a Jonquilla narcissus with three or more small, golden-yellow flowers on each stem. The cup is a little darker, almost orange-yellow, and the flowers are sweetly scented. With 100 bulbs you create a fragrant golden drift that becomes denser every year.

About this variety

'Garden Opera' was bred in England and registered in 2006. Its name recalls opera performances in the garden of the breeder's family. Each stem carries several star-shaped flowers of about 6 cm in warm golden yellow, and the small cup is bowl-shaped and slightly darker. Like all jonquils, it is sweetly scented.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits borders, meadows and large pots. With 100 bulbs you can plant a larger area, for example along a path, where you can enjoy the scent as you pass. Good partners are blue grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots and lungwort. In large pots by a seating area it is especially fragrant when planted densely. Because it flowers rather late in the season, it bridges the gap between the early trumpet daffodils and the tulips.

The plant is vigorous and multiplies well. The many-flowered stems are particularly good for the vase, and a small bunch will scent a whole room. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of only minor importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip pointing upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. For large areas a bulb planter is worthwhile.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In a meadow, only mow after that. You can cut off faded flowers in the bed. Divide dense clumps after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
