  • Round, button-like flowers
  • Flat, disc-shaped cup
  • Miniature, about 15–25 cm tall
  • Late flowering from April to May
  • Sweet scent, yellow fading to cream

'Sun Disc' is a miniature Jonquilla with almost perfectly round yellow flowers. The cup sits flat on the petals like a small disc, hence the name. It has a sweet scent and flowers late, extending the daffodil season in rock gardens, at the front of borders and in pots.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Sun Disc' look like small yellow buttons: round, neat and with a flat cup lying close against the broad petals. As the flowers age, the petals lighten to cream while the cup keeps a little more colour. Each stem carries one to three fragrant flowers. The variety was bred by the Englishman Alec Gray, who was known for his miniature daffodils.

At about 15–25 cm tall, it is made for rock gardens, gaps in walls, the front of borders, window boxes and pots. Planted in larger groups, it forms a low, golden-yellow carpet. As a late variety, it flowers alongside species tulips, late grape hyacinths and leopard's bane. It also works well as underplanting for tulips in pots.

Small posies in an egg cup or liqueur glass are a delight. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. In a sunny, well-drained spot, 'Sun Disc' is long-lived and slowly multiplies.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Choose a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil. It does especially well in rock gardens and in pots with a little grit mixed into the compost. Plant the bulbs in groups of at least ten.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow so the bulb can build up strength for next year. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
