  • Slightly pointed petals
  • Flowers from March to April, height about 35–45 cm
  • Heritage variety, around 1939

'Sweetness' is a heritage Jonquilla narcissus dating from around 1939. Its flowers are deep golden yellow throughout, with slightly pointed petals and a rich, sweet scent. They last a long time, are easy to force indoors and return reliably every year.

About this variety

'Sweetness' has been grown for more than eighty years, and the name gives away the reason: its scent is sweet and strong. The flowers are uniformly golden yellow, with slightly pointed petals and a small cup in the same yellow. Usually there is one flower per stem, sometimes more follow. The individual flowers last remarkably long.

At about 35–45 cm tall, it suits borders, pots and plantings by the front door or along paths. It naturalises well in lawns and meadows. Good companions are blue grape hyacinths, squills or white daffodils. With purple tulips, its golden yellow makes a strong contrast.

In the vase it is long-lasting and fragrant, and in winter it is easy to force in pots. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. 'Sweetness' comes back year after year and is one of the most reliable scented daffodils. Anyone who has had a bunch of it indoors usually plants more the following autumn.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil is ideal. To enjoy the scent, plant them close to paths or seating areas. Groups of ten bulbs look best.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow so the bulb can build up strength for next year. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
