  • Naturalises well, lovely cut flower

With 100 bulbs of the yellow daffodil 'California' you can create a bright spring display. This large-cupped variety flowers in rich yellow in April and is robust and long-lived. It is suitable for naturalising in meadows and lawns as well as for large groups in the border.

About this variety

Yellow daffodils are the epitome of spring, and planted in large numbers they show their full effect. 'California' is a large-cupped daffodil with yellow flowers. The cup is well developed but shorter than on a trumpet daffodil. The flowers stand on strong stems.

At about 35–45 cm tall it is ideal for meadows, lawns, banks and woodland edges. In the border, plant it in groups between perennials whose leaves will later hide the dying foliage. Blue squills, grape hyacinths or forget-me-nots make the yellow shine.

Daffodils naturalise well and form ever larger colonies over the years. Voles and deer usually avoid them. For the vase, cut the stems when the buds are just showing colour. Daffodils are not an important source of food for bees. With 100 bulbs you can densely plant an area of about one and a half to two square metres. If you prefer a looser spread, they will cover a larger corner of meadow, and the groups will close up over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. In a meadow, scatter them loosely and plant them where they fall. Sun to partial shade and a free-draining soil are ideal.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. In a lawn, do not mow until the leaves have died back. You can pinch off faded flowers in the border. Divide dense clumps after a few years. In the vase, daffodils release a slime that harms other flowers, so stand the stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
