'Ice Follies' is one of the most popular white daffodils and has been available since 1963. The wide, flat cup is ruffled and opens lemon yellow before fading to creamy white. The variety is vigorous, flowers very freely and naturalises reliably, ideal for large plantings.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Ice Follies' reach about 10 cm and have a strikingly wide, flat cup. On opening it is lemon yellow with a ruffled rim, and after a few days it fades to a pale cream or almost white. The petals are pure white. A group therefore always shows several shades.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it is ideal for meadows, lawns, woodland edges and large groups in the border. In front of dark hedges the bright white looks particularly fresh. Combine it with yellow trumpet daffodils, blue squills or hellebores. It also looks good in containers. For a natural effect, set the bulbs in irregular groups rather than rows. Over the years this creates an area that looks as if it grew there by itself.

As a cut flower it lasts a long time and is lightly scented. Its greatest strength, however, lies in the garden: it multiplies vigorously and forms dense clumps over the years that flower more richly every spring. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. Sun to partial shade and free-draining soil are ideal. For a meadow, scatter the bulbs loosely and plant them where they land.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. You can pinch off large faded flowers. In a lawn, only mow after the leaves have died back. Because the variety grows strongly, it is worth dividing dense clumps every few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
