  • Pure white petals
  • Striking orange-red cup
  • Finely fringed cup rim
  • Flowers in March and April
  • Height about 45–55 cm

'June Allyson' is named after a Hollywood actress of the 1950s and has something of her glamour. Pure white petals frame a striking orange-red cup with a finely fringed rim. A large-cupped daffodil with strong contrast for beds, meadows and the vase. An eye-catcher in the spring garden.

About this variety

The cup of 'June Allyson' is the heart of the flower. It glows orange-red and is finely fringed at the rim, which gives it a lively look. The pure white petals form a clear frame around it. The variety was named after the American actress June Allyson, who was well known in the early 1950s.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it suits beds, borders and meadows. In groups, the orange and white contrast shines from afar. Lovely partners are blue grape hyacinths, early orange tulips and the fresh green of ferns. It is also an eye-catcher in containers on the patio. In front of a dark hedge or evergreen shrubs, the pure white stands out especially well and the orange of the cup looks even stronger.

As a cut flower it brings colour to spring bouquets. The bulbs return every year and form strong clumps over time. Voles and deer usually avoid daffodils, which also makes it interesting for rural gardens. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip pointing upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. The contrast shows best in groups of ten or more.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Pinch off faded flowers. In a lawn, only mow once the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
