'Tamara' is a yellow large-cupped daffodil for anyone who wants plenty of colour in April. With 100 bulbs, you can plant generous groups in borders, under fruit trees or in a meadow. The variety is hardy, naturalises well and returns every spring.

About this variety

Large-cupped daffodils are the essence of spring: strong stems, broad petals and a well-defined cup. 'Tamara' shows this classic form in yellow. It is an easy-going variety that makes its impact in numbers. With 100 bulbs, you can create drifts that shine from a distance.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it suits the middle of beds, borders and woodland edges. It is especially lovely in broad bands through a meadow or under fruit trees. Good companions are blue squills, grape hyacinths, white daffodils and early tulips. Among perennials such as daylilies or hardy geraniums, the foliage disappears unnoticed after flowering.

The stems are good for the vase. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Leave the bulbs where they are and they will multiply, forming dense, vigorous clumps over the years. In this way, a single planting becomes a spring display that grows a little larger and fuller each year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Sunny to partly shaded spots with well-drained, moist soil are ideal. For large areas, it is easiest to plant groups in wide planting holes. In a meadow, a bulb planter helps.

Care

Snip off faded flowers so the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it yellows, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
