  • Large golden-yellow cups
  • Large-flowered garden crocus
  • Flowers in March
  • About 10–20 cm tall
  • For sun and partial shade, 20 corms

This large-flowered crocus carries bright golden-yellow cups that appear in March. Yellow is visible from afar and complements violet and white crocuses particularly well. With 20 corms you add sunny accents to lawns, beds or pots and have an early splash of colour every year that reliably returns.

About this variety

Yellow crocuses look like a piece of sunshine in late winter. This large-flowered variety forms sturdy golden-yellow cups that open wide in sunshine. The colour is even and warm, and the flowers are clearly larger than those of the small botanical crocuses. The narrow foliage appears together with the flowers.

At about 10–20 cm tall, the yellow crocus suits lawns, bed edges, rock gardens and the ground beneath shrubs. It tolerates sun and partial shade. It looks loveliest together with violet varieties such as 'Flower Record' and white ones such as 'Jeanne d'Arc'. In pots and window boxes on the balcony, just 20 corms are enough for a dense display. Grape hyacinths and early daffodils follow later.

Bees and bumblebees are particularly fond of yellow crocuses and find pollen there in March. The crocus is hardy and naturalises in suitable spots. Mice like to eat crocus corms, however. In gardens at risk, a wire basket helps when planting.

Planting

Plant the corms from August to November, 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart, pointed end up. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is suitable. Set the corms in one or two dense groups rather than individually.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Hardly any other care is needed. After a few years you can divide dense clumps.
