'Miss Peculiar' is an OT lily made to impress. Its flowers grow up to 21 cm across, are white to cream and carry a warm orange-yellow in the centre. On stems about 140–160 cm tall and with a delicate scent, it draws every eye.

About this variety

As an OT hybrid, 'Miss Peculiar' combines the flower size of the Oriental lily with the vigour of the trumpet lily. The flowers open wide and the petals curve back. White or cream at the edges, they shade to a bright orange-yellow in the centre. At up to 21 cm across, they are among the largest in our range.

At about 140 to 160 cm tall, this lily is a plant for the back of the border and for woodland edges. It brings structure to a planting and rises above perennials such as coneflower, yarrow or bee balm, which pick up its warm colours. It also tolerates heavier clay soil, as long as it does not stay wet. It is only partly suited to containers.

In the vase, a single stem looks like a whole bouquet. Cut when the first flower opens and remove the anthers. In the garden, bees and butterflies visit the flowers. The bulbs grow stronger from year to year, and the plant then carries more and larger flowers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them about three times as deep as the bulb is tall, around 15–20 cm, and 25–30 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot following the rule 'head in the sun, feet in the shade' is ideal. The soil can be loamy, sandy or clay, but needs good drainage.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry weeks and avoid waterlogging. In windy spots, support the tall stems with a cane. Watch out for lily beetle and pick off the red beetles. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, including the pollen and vase water. The bulbs overwinter reliably in the ground, even at higher altitudes.
