  • Well suited to pots, hardy even at higher altitudes

'Muscadet' is an Oriental lily with large white flowers speckled with pink and bearing a pink central stripe. It has a sweet scent and, thanks to its compact height, does well in pots and at the edge of beds. An elegant variety for the terrace, garden and vase.

About this variety

'Muscadet' shows how delicate an Oriental lily can look. The flowers are pure white and covered in fine pink dots, with a pink stripe running down the centre of each petal. A green star shimmers in the centre of the flower. The edges are slightly wavy. At about 20 cm across, the flowers are large, and in July and August they give off a sweet, intense scent.

At about 70–90 cm tall, 'Muscadet' is shorter than many Oriental lilies. This makes it a good fit for the front of a bed, where you can enjoy the flowers and scent up close. As it is well suited to containers, it is ideal for pots next to a seating area or by the front door. Pink phlox, lavender or white petunias are good neighbours.

In the vase, the large flowers are an eye-catcher and keep giving off their scent. Cut the stems when the first bud opens and pick off the anthers. Plant a few extra bulbs so that enough flowers remain in the garden. As 'Muscadet' is hardy, even at higher altitudes, it flowers for many years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November or from February to May, 15–20 cm deep and about 20 cm apart. Oriental lilies like loose, humus-rich, rather lime-poor soil that drains well. In pots, a drainage layer at the bottom helps. A sunny to partly shaded spot with shaded feet is ideal.

Care

Water evenly, more often in pots, but without waterlogging. With heavy flowers, a stake can be useful. Watch out for lily beetles from April to August. Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Lilies are poisonous to cats, including the pollen and vase water.
