  • Strong red stalks
  • Mild flavour for cakes and compote
  • About 50–70 cm tall
  • Harvest from April to the end of June
  • Long-lived, many years in the same spot

'Canada Red' is a rhubarb with strong red stalks. They taste mild and are ideal for compote, cakes and jam. The perennial is hardy, long-lived and crops for many years. Five plants will supply a whole family.

About this variety

Rhubarb is one of the first harvests in the vegetable garden. With 'Canada Red' the stalks are a strong red, which gives cakes and compote a lovely colour. The large, wavy leaves form an impressive clump. In early summer the plant may produce tall flower stems with creamy white panicles.

Rhubarb needs a sunny to partly shaded spot with deep, rich soil. At about 50–70 cm tall and with large leaves, it needs room. It suits the vegetable garden, the cottage garden or the edge of a bed. Herbs, soft fruit bushes and nasturtiums make good neighbours.

Harvest the stalks by twisting and pulling them at the base rather than cutting. Do not harvest, or harvest only a little, in the first year after planting. From the second year the plant crops generously. A rhubarb clump can stay in the same spot for ten years or more. If you want an earlier harvest, place a bucket or forcing pot over the plant in February; the stalks then grow faster and stay paler and particularly tender.

Planting

Plant 'Canada Red' ideally in autumn in September and October, or in spring in March and April. Dig a large hole twice the size of the crown and mix in plenty of compost. Set the buds 2–3 cm below the surface and space plants 80–100 cm apart. Then water in thoroughly.

Care

Water generously during dry spells and give compost or manure in spring and after the harvest. Harvest until the end of June and never take more than half the stalks. Break off flower stems early so the energy goes into the leaves. The leaves contain a lot of oxalic acid and are not edible.
