  • Very thick, long stalks
  • High yield
  • Strong, tart flavour
  • About 90–110 cm tall, up to 100 cm wide
  • Harvest from April to the end of June

'Goliath' lives up to its name: this rhubarb forms particularly large plants with thick, long stalks. They are green with a reddish base and have a strong, tart flavour, ideal for compote, jam and cakes. Five crowns give a generous harvest.

About this variety

If you use a lot of rhubarb, 'Goliath' is a reliable supplier. The stalks grow strikingly thick and long, the leaves huge and wavy, so the plant almost looks like a foliage perennial. In early summer, tall creamy white flower panicles appear; remove them early for a better harvest.

Plant 'Goliath' in a sunny spot with deep, humus-rich soil. At about 90–110 cm tall and up to 100 cm wide, it needs plenty of room, ideally at the edge of the vegetable garden. It tolerates almost any soil as long as it is rich and moist. Herbs such as lovage, or soft fruit bushes, are good neighbours.

Harvest the stalks by twisting them off at the base. Leave the plant to grow undisturbed in the first year. From the second year you can harvest generously until the end of June. After that the plant needs time to build up strength for the following year. Well cared for, it stays productive for many years.

Planting

Plant 'Goliath' in autumn in September and October, or in spring in March and April. The planting hole should be twice the size of the crown and contain plenty of compost. Set the buds 2–3 cm deep and space plants 80–100 cm apart. A sunny spot is ideal. Water in thoroughly.

Care

Water generously in dry weather; rhubarb is very thirsty. Give compost or well-rotted manure in spring and after the harvest. Never take more than half the stalks and harvest only until the end of June. Break off flower stems early. The leaves are not edible because of their oxalic acid content.
