  • Semi-double, snow-white flowers
  • Delicate, papery petals
  • Pleasantly fragrant
  • Flowers from May to October
  • Occasional round red hips

'Blanc Double de Coubert' is a robust shrub rose with large, semi-double flowers in pure white. The delicate, almost papery petals have a pleasant fragrance. New flowers keep appearing from May to October, occasionally followed by red hips.

About this variety

White roses look fresh and calm, and 'Blanc Double de Coubert' shows this especially well. Its large, semi-double flowers are snow white, with thin, slightly crumpled petals like tissue paper. Yellow stamens glow in the centre. There is also a pleasant fragrance that is particularly noticeable on warm evenings.

The shrub rose grows about 140–160 cm tall and around 150 cm wide. It works as a specimen, in groups or as a loose flowering hedge. In white gardens it goes with baby's breath, Actaea and white bellflowers. With blue perennials such as catmint or sage you get a clear contrast. It does only moderately well in a large container.

It flowers in several flushes from May to October. The delicate flowers make elegant cut flowers for simple arrangements. In autumn, round red hips sometimes form, giving the shrub a second season. The shrub is robust, grows densely and needs little attention. This makes it suitable for wildlife-friendly gardens too, where a white rose should set the tone without demanding much care.

Planting

Bare-root roses are best planted from October to April in frost-free ground. Soak the roots for a few hours beforehand. The graft union sits about 5 cm below the soil. Keep a spacing of 105–150 cm and choose a sunny spot with moist, fertile soil.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry spells. Feed in spring and after the first flush. Hard pruning is not necessary: thin out old shoots in spring and remove dead wood. Leave some flowers on in late summer if you want hips. The rose is hardy in Switzerland.
