  • Double, globular flowers in dark purple, approx. 6 cm
  • Matures to violet with a blue-grey sheen
  • Light, powdery fragrance
  • Flowers once, in June and July
  • Very frost-hardy, about 140–160 cm tall

'Cardinal de Richelieu' is one of the darkest roses of all. Its globular, double flowers open deep purple and mature to violet with a blue-grey sheen. A powdery fragrance accompanies the flowers in June and July. A historic shrub rose with an almost theatrical presence.

About this variety

The colour of 'Cardinal de Richelieu' is hard to describe. The flowers of around 6 cm open in a deep, velvety purple and gradually turn violet, overlaid with a blue-grey sheen. The petals curve backwards, forming small balls. A powdery fragrance hangs over the shrub.

At about 140–160 cm tall and 100 cm wide, the rose forms a dense, egg-shaped bush with matt, dark foliage. It suits historic rose gardens, woodland edges or mixed borders. Light partners such as silvery wormwood, white bellflowers or pink shrub roses make its dark violet look even deeper.

'Cardinal de Richelieu' flowers once a year, in June and July. Those weeks make it well worth its place in the garden. The dark flowers are something special in arrangements and harmonise with pink, silver and white. The variety is very frost-hardy and copes well with Swiss winters. Once you have seen it in flower, you will understand why it has been grown in rose gardens for generations.

Planting

Plant the bare-root rose from October to April when the ground is frost-free. Soak the roots for a few hours beforehand. Set the graft union about 5 cm below the soil. The spacing is 70–100 cm. A sunny spot with fertile, moist soil encourages generous flowering.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in the first year. Feed in spring and after flowering. As the rose flowers on the previous year's wood, prune only lightly in spring and thin out old shoots straight after flowering. It is hardy in Switzerland, even at higher altitudes.
