'Reine des Violettes' lives up to its name: its densely double flowers glow in rich violet and are strongly fragrant. This old garden rose has almost thornless shoots and flowers from May to October. A piece of rose history for romantic gardens.

About this variety

Violet is a rare colour among roses, and 'Reine des Violettes' shows it in full splendour. The buds open into flat, many-petalled flowers of about 8 cm whose violet gradually turns to a soft mauve. The shoots carry hardly any thorns, which makes pruning and care pleasant.

In the garden it develops into an upright shrub about 130–150 cm tall. It suits cottage gardens, woodland edges or a border of old roses. Good partners are delphiniums, foxgloves and silvery foliage such as lamb's ear, which makes its violet look even deeper. It is only partly suitable for pots.

After a lavish first flush, it repeats into October. Its fragrance is intense and sweet, so even a single flower in a vase stands out. Collectors of historic roses will find in it a variety with plenty of charm and a colour that hardly any other rose offers.

Planting

Bare-root roses are best planted from October to April in frost-free ground. Stand the roots in water for a few hours beforehand. The graft union goes about 5 cm below the soil. Keep a spacing of 80–100 cm and choose a sunny spot with moist, fertile soil.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry periods. Feed in spring and after the first flush so that the repeat flowering is strong. In spring, remove dead and old shoots and shorten the rest by about a third. Deadhead regularly. The rose survives Swiss winters, even at higher altitudes.
