  • Red-violet flowers with a cobalt-blue blotch
  • Flowers in May and June
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • For sun and partial shade, almost any soil
  • Introduced in 1981 by Ben Hager

'Chilled Wine' flowers in a rich red-violet reminiscent of dark wine, with a strong cobalt-blue blotch. This Siberian iris is undemanding, grows in almost any soil and is hardy in Switzerland. In May and June it adds an elegant touch to the perennial border.

About this variety

The name says it all: 'Chilled Wine' shows a deep red-violet, like chilled red wine in a glass. A striking cobalt-blue blotch on the falls makes the flower unmistakable. The variety was introduced in 1981 by the American breeder Ben Hager.

It thrives in full sun and partial shade and copes with almost any moist garden soil. At about 90–110 cm tall, it suits the middle of the border. Hostas, daylilies and hardy geraniums have proved good partners: they take over once the iris has finished and cover the base of the plant. It also shows up well in a wildflower meadow or by a pond. It is only partly suitable for pots.

The flowers can be cut and last a few days in the vase. Be patient: Siberian irises take two to five years to reach their full size. Then a strong clump forms that flowers reliably every year.

Planting

Plant the rootstocks in spring or autumn, shallow and only a few centimetres deep. Space them 25–35 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with moist soil is ideal; lime, loam, clay and sand are tolerated. Water in well.

Care

Water regularly in the first few months and later in dry weeks. A layer of compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded flowers and cut back the foliage in late winter. Winter protection is not needed. Only divide the clump when it becomes bare in the middle after many years.
