  • Flowers about 9 cm across, lightly scented

'Barrett Browning' is a proven small-cupped daffodil from 1945. Broad white petals frame a short, ruffled cup in strong orange red. The contrast glows from afar, and the variety becomes more beautiful year after year.

About this variety

'Barrett Browning' is a daffodil that has been found in gardens for generations. The flowers measure about 9 cm. The broad petals are white and stand like sails around the small, flat cup. This is ruffled at the rim and glows a strong orange to orange red. The leaves have a silvery sheen.

At about 45–55 cm tall it suits borders, rock gardens and meadows. In large groups the orange and white contrast is especially effective. Combine it with blue grape hyacinths, squills or orange tulips. In front of dark shrubs the white looks fresh and clear.

The sturdy stems make it a good cut flower with a delicate scent. 'Barrett Browning' naturalises reliably and forms strong clumps over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little interest to bees, however. Plant generously: an area of fifty or a hundred bulbs looks stronger every year as the clumps grow. In a container on the balcony it also keeps its clear colour for many days.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November. Set them 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. Sun to partial shade and a free-draining soil are ideal. It looks best in groups of ten to twenty.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. This lets the bulb gather strength for the next flowering. You can pinch off faded flowers. In a lawn, do not mow until the leaves have died back. In the vase, daffodils release a slime that harms other flowers, so stand the stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
