  • Historic variety from 1934

'Dreamlight' is a historic small-cupped daffodil from 1934 that recalls a pheasant's eye narcissus. Round white petals frame a flat, pale cup with a green eye and a red rim. It flowers late, in April and May, and looks delicate and elegant.

About this variety

If you love pheasant's eye narcissi, you will like 'Dreamlight'. Its round petals are pure white, and the cup is flat like a small disc and pale champagne in colour. A green eye glows at the centre and a fine scarlet to orange-red edge runs round the rim. The flowers measure about 7 cm. The variety was bred in 1934 by Guy L. Wilson.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits beds, borders and meadows. Because it flowers late, it extends the daffodil season into May. Good partners are late tulips, columbines and camassias. It also goes well with Poeticus narcissi such as 'Actaea' and makes a harmonious, refined planting. In front of dark foliage, such as yew or box, the clear white of its flowers stands out particularly well.

In the vase it looks delicate and refined, and its light scent comes through up close. In the garden it is long-lived and naturalises well. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of only minor importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil that stays moist in spring is ideal. In a meadow, scatter the bulbs loosely.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it is yellow. In a meadow, only mow after that. You can pinch off faded flowers in the bed. Divide dense clumps after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
