  • White, nodding bell-shaped flowers
  • Fine greenish veining
  • Flowers in April and May
  • About 20–30 cm tall
  • Naturalises in moist meadows and lawns

The white form of the snake's head fritillary bears nodding bells in pure white, often with fine greenish veining. It looks delicate but is robust and naturalises readily in moist meadows. With 60 bulbs you can create a natural-looking group.

About this variety

Fritillaria meleagris is an old European meadow plant. Its botanical name refers to the plumage of the guinea fowl, as the typical flowers are finely chequered. In 'Alba' the purple is missing; the hanging bells are white with only delicate greenish veins. They float on thin stems above narrow, grass-like foliage.

At about 20–30 cm tall, the snake's head fritillary suits the front of borders, rock gardens and above all naturalistic meadows. It likes moist, even slightly damp soil. Together with the violet chequered form it creates a lively picture. Good companions are grape hyacinths, wild daffodils and cuckooflower.

Bees like to visit the bells in spring. In a suitable spot the snake's head fritillary slowly spreads by seed. Voles and deer usually leave it alone. The flowers are very pretty in small bouquets. Scattered loosely in a meadow, they create a delicate white veil over the years. This looks especially lovely under a fruit tree or at the edge of a pond, where the soil stays moist in spring.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, as soon as possible after they arrive, as they dry out easily. Set them tip upwards 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with moist, humus-rich soil is ideal.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. In a meadow, only mow once the foliage has died back and seed has been able to form. Keep the soil moist in spring. Little further care is needed.
