'Papillon Blanc' is a split-corona daffodil with white petals and a tousled pale yellow centre that recalls a butterfly. As the flower fades, the corona becomes ever paler. The flower looks light and airy and is a lovely cut flower.

About this variety

The name says it all: 'Papillon Blanc' means white butterfly. The corona is split several times and lies loosely ruffled on the white petals. On opening it is a soft lemon yellow, and over time it lightens almost to white. The flower, about 9 cm across, looks fresh and almost floating, more elegant than classic daffodils and less ordinary.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it is versatile. Plant it where the details can be seen up close: along paths, in front of the house, in pots and boxes. It goes well with hyacinths, grape hyacinths and pastel tulips. It also brings light to the woodland edge in spring.

In the vase it lasts a long time on its strong stems and is lightly scented. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. In a suitable spot it returns for many years, even if it spreads a little more slowly than wild forms.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded position with free-draining, moist soil is ideal. Plant in groups of at least seven bulbs. In pots, a drainage layer ensures that no water stands.

Care

Remove faded flowers, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. It prepares next year's flowers. After a few years, dense clumps can be divided. Wear gloves when planting. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap makes other flowers in the vase wilt faster, so stand cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
