  • Split, heavily frilled corona
  • Uniformly sunny yellow
  • Strong, tall stems
  • Flowers in March, 35–45 cm tall
  • Dutch novelty from 2019

'Sailorman' is a split-corona daffodil in uniform sunny yellow. Its corona is split and heavily frilled, so the flowers look almost like foam crests on waves. Strong stems carry them in March, ideal for beds and the vase.

About this variety

In split-corona daffodils the corona is slit and lies flat on the petals. 'Sailorman' takes this to the extreme: the corona is so heavily ruffled and frilled that the whole flower looks lush and full of movement. Petals and corona are an even sunny yellow. The variety was introduced in the Netherlands in 2019. The name recalls foaming waves, as a sailor knows them.

At 35–45 cm tall, 'Sailorman' suits the middle of beds and the cutting garden. Blue hyacinths, grape hyacinths and white tulips create lovely contrasts. In containers it looks lush and cheerful. Plant it in groups so that the special flower shape shows to good effect.

In the vase 'Sailorman' is an eye-catcher, and the frilled flowers look almost double. It flowers freely and returns every year. Voles and deer avoid daffodils, as all parts are poisonous. The strong stems hold the flowers upright even in wind.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In heavy soils, add some sand to the planting hole to prevent waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage for at least six weeks after flowering, until it turns yellow, as this is how the bulb forms next year's flowers. Pinch off faded flowers. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. Daffodils are poisonous; their stem sap harms other cut flowers, so stand them in water on their own for a few hours first.
