  • Intense wild strawberry flavour
  • Crops repeatedly into autumn
  • White flowers from April
  • Compact plants, about 20–30 cm tall
  • Good for pots, window boxes and raised beds

'Mara des Bois' combines the size of a garden strawberry with the flavour of a wild strawberry. The variety crops not just once but again and again from early summer into autumn. So you can enjoy fresh, fragrant berries from the garden or balcony for months.

About this variety

'Mara des Bois' comes from France and is much loved by food lovers. The fruits are medium-sized, bright red and smell strongly of wild strawberries. The flesh is juicy and sweet. Because the plant keeps forming new flowers, the berries do not all ripen at once but in several waves.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it suits vegetable and raised beds as well as pots and window boxes. It needs a sunny spot and loose, humus-rich soil that does not dry out. It also looks lovely as an edible edging or among herbs such as thyme and chives. In pots, water and feed regularly.

The flowers are a good source of food for bees and bumblebees, and as they keep appearing, the insects benefit for months. The plants crop heavily for about two to three years; after that it is worth renewing them with young plants from runners.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May, or in autumn in September and October. Make sure the crown is not covered with soil. Space them 30–40 cm apart and choose a sunny spot. Then water in thoroughly.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist, more often in pots than in beds. As the variety crops for a long time, feed in spring and again in summer with a berry fertiliser. Straw or wood wool keeps the fruit clean. Remove withered leaves and surplus runners.
