  • Sweet, dark red, medium-sized fruits
  • High yield in early summer
  • White flowers from April to June
  • Plants about 20–30 cm tall
  • 10 plants for a small bed

'Polka' is a high-yielding garden strawberry with sweet, dark red fruits. In early summer it bears many medium-sized berries that are delicious fresh, as jam or in cakes. With ten plants you can start a small, productive strawberry bed.

About this variety

'Polka' is a proven variety from the Netherlands. Its fruits are conical, glossy dark red and red right through. The flavour is sweet and full. The plants crop heavily and reliably, making them a good choice for families who want to harvest lots of strawberries at once.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it belongs in a vegetable bed or raised bed where it gets full sun. The soil should be loose, humus-rich and moist; sandy loam is ideal. Plant in rows with enough space for air to circulate between the leaves. Garlic, leeks or marigolds nearby are proven neighbours.

Bees and bumblebees love the white flowers, which ensures well-formed fruit. Lay straw under the plants before the fruit ripens. After about three years it is worth starting a new bed in a different spot, ideally with young plants from your own runners.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May, or in autumn in September and October. The crown of the plant stays above the soil. Keep 30–40 cm between plants in the row and about 50 cm between rows. Water in well.

Care

Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruiting. Work in compost or berry fertiliser in spring. After harvest, cut off old leaves and remove surplus runners, so the plants shoot vigorously the following year.
