'Canaliculatus' is a small Tazetta narcissus from the Mediterranean, known since around 1915. Each stem opens up to eight small, sweetly scented white flowers with a golden-yellow cup. At around 10–20 cm tall, it is ideal for pots, window boxes and rock gardens.

About this variety

'Canaliculatus' is small but flowers very freely. One bulb often produces several stems, each with a little posy of white flowers. The petals curve back slightly, and at the centre sits a small, button-like cup in golden yellow. The scent is sweet and surprisingly strong for such a small plant.

At around 10–20 cm tall, it belongs in the rock garden, at the front of a bed and in pots and boxes, where you can enjoy the scent up close. It comes from the Mediterranean and likes a sunny, warm spot with soil that dries out in summer. Combine it with grape hyacinths, thyme or small species tulips.

In a suitable warm position, 'Canaliculatus' naturalises and returns every year. In exposed locations a pot is the safer choice. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. A few stems will scent a small glass on the table.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, about 10 cm deep and 5–10 cm apart, tip upwards. Choose a sunny, warm spot with very free-draining soil. In colder areas, plant them in pots or against a sheltered house wall.

Care

Let the foliage die back after flowering. In summer the bulb needs a dry rest, so do not water then. In winter, protect the planting spot with brushwood and move pots to a sheltered place. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
