  • Miniature narcissus, about 15–25 cm tall
  • Three to five flowers per stem
  • Creamy white with a yellow cup
  • Sweet scent, flowers in April
  • Several stems per bulb, naturalises well

'Minnow' is a Tazetta narcissus in miniature: each stem carries three to five dainty flowers with creamy white petals and a yellow cup. It is sweetly scented, grows only about 15–25 cm tall and multiplies year by year. Ideal for pots, rock gardens and lawns.

About this variety

Small but rich in flowers: each bulb of 'Minnow' produces several stems, and each carries a loose posy of three to five flowers. The petals open pale butter yellow and lighten to creamy white, while the small cup stays yellow. There is also a delicate, sweet scent. The narrow foliage stays short and tidy, so the flowers show well.

Because of its low height of about 15–25 cm, 'Minnow' belongs at the front of a bed, in the rock garden or in pots and window boxes near the house. In lawns and beneath light tree cover it spreads over time. Crocuses, grape hyacinths, dwarf irises and low species tulips go well with it. In a shallow bowl on an outdoor table you can admire the abundance of flowers up close, and children enjoy the little posies.

It also does well in the vase, for example in small glasses on the table. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. Leave 'Minnow' to grow undisturbed and it will return in growing numbers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to lightly shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In pots you can set the bulbs a little closer. Make sure there is drainage so that water does not collect.

Care

Let the foliage turn completely yellow after flowering before you remove it. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous; stand cut stems on their own for a few hours before mixing them with other flowers.
