  • Up to ten flowers per stem
  • Silvery white with a pale yellow cup
  • Sweet scent
  • Height about 30–40 cm, flowers in April
  • Historic variety from 1914

'Silver Chimes' bears up to ten small, nodding flowers on each stem, silvery white with a pale primrose-yellow cup. This old variety from 1914 is sweetly scented and flowers later than many other daffodils. A delicate, elegant sight for beds and pots.

About this variety

Its flowers look like little bells, hence the name. Up to ten nodding flowers with silvery white petals and a small, pale yellow cup hang from each stem. The variety was introduced in 1914 and is one of the historic daffodils still in demand today. It flowers in the second half of the daffodil season.

At around 30–40 cm tall, it suits borders, the woodland edge, rock gardens and pots. In naturalistic plantings it looks light and bright. It combines beautifully with blue grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots or late white tulips. In a pot by the front door you can enjoy the scent best.

As a cut flower it is delicate and fragrant, and just two stems fill a small glass. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. In a warm, free-draining spot, 'Silver Chimes' returns reliably. In exposed locations, plant it in a sheltered place.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with very free-draining soil. Tazettas prefer it rather dry and warm in summer. In pots, make sure drainage is good.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, so that the bulb gathers strength for next year. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
