'Flore Pleno' is the double form of the tiger lily. Its orange-red flowers consist of many layers of recurved petals, densely speckled with dark spots. In August and September, when many perennials are fading, it brings fire to the garden once more at about 140–160 cm tall.

About this variety

The tiger lily is a classic of old cottage gardens, and 'Flore Pleno' goes one better. Instead of single flowers, it bears densely double, nodding flowers with many layers of recurved petals. The strong orange shades into yellow and red and is dotted with dark spots. At around 18 cm across, the flowers look opulent and a little nostalgic.

At about 140–160 cm tall, 'Flore Pleno' belongs at the back of the border. Dark-leaved companions such as purple Joe Pye weed or bugbane and the blue of autumn asters make the orange glow. It is also at home in a wildlife garden and can spread over time. It also grows well in large containers.

The flowers are unscented, which some people appreciate in the vase. Cut, they last a long time and look good in late-summer bouquets with dahlias and grasses. In the garden, they are popular with pollinators. With 4 bulbs, you plant a group straight away that becomes denser year after year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them 15–20 cm deep, about three times the height of the bulb, 25–30 cm apart. Sun to partial shade suits it well, following the rule 'head in the sun, feet in the shade'. The tiger lily also tolerates chalky and clay soils as long as water drains away well.

Care

Keep the soil slightly moist in summer but rather dry in winter. The tall stems with their heavy double flowers appreciate a supporting stake. Watch out for lily beetles and pick them off. The bulbs are hardy, even at higher altitudes, and stay in the ground. Lilies are poisonous to cats: keep cats away from the plant, pollen and vase water.
