  • Large flowers of about 10–11 cm
  • Trumpet as long as the petals
  • Weather-resistant, proven since 1938
  • Flowers in March and April

'Dutch Master' is the trumpet daffodil par excellence: large, all golden-yellow flowers with a trumpet as long as the petals. Since 1938 it has been one of the most widely planted daffodils in the world. It is weather-resistant, naturalises well and returns reliably every year.

About this variety

When people picture a trumpet daffodil, they usually see a flower like 'Dutch Master'. Petals and trumpet glow in the same rich golden yellow. The trumpet is long and slightly wavy at the rim, and the petals lean forward a little. At 10 to 11 cm, the flowers are large. The variety is regarded as the successor to the famous 'King Alfred'.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it is ideal for large areas: in meadows, on banks, along the woodland edge and in borders. In groups of 25 or more it shines from afar. Good partners are blue squills, grape hyacinths and white daffodils. In containers by the house it also creates a spring mood. Thanks to its strong stems it stays upright even in wind and rain.

For the vase it is an Easter classic and has a light scent. It naturalises reliably and forms strong clumps over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip pointing upwards. Sun to partial shade and free-draining soil are ideal. For large areas a bulb planter is worthwhile.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Pinch off large flowers once they fade so that the bulb does not put energy into seed. In a lawn, only mow once the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. Freshly cut daffodils release a slime into the water that harms other flowers: stand them on their own for a few hours before mixing them.
