'King Alfred' is the legendary trumpet daffodil against which yellow trumpet daffodils have been measured for over a hundred years. The flowers are all golden yellow with a large, open trumpet and stand on strong stems. A classic for anyone who loves the typical trumpet daffodil.

About this variety

'King Alfred' was registered in England at the end of the 19th century and shaped the image of the trumpet daffodil like no other variety. Petals and trumpet glow in a rich golden yellow. The trumpet is large, open and slightly wavy at the rim. The flowers are strong and stand upright on sturdy stems.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it belongs in borders, large groups, meadows and along woodland edges. Planted in quantity, it creates the classic picture of a daffodil meadow. Lovely partners are blue squills, grape hyacinths and white daffodils. In containers by the house it also creates a spring mood. Under fruit trees or along a sunny path it looks particularly natural.

As a cut flower it is the very essence of an Easter bouquet. In the garden it returns every year and naturalises. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little importance to bees. As the variety is very old, similar yellow trumpet daffodils are sometimes sold under its name.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip pointing upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. For a meadow, spread the bulbs loosely.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Pinch off the large flowers once they fade. In a lawn, only mow once the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. Once cut, daffodils release a slime into the water that harms other flowers: stand them on their own for a few hours before mixing them.
