'Mount Hood' is the classic white trumpet daffodil. Its large trumpet flowers open creamy yellow and turn pure white within a few days. The variety has been on the market since the 1930s and is regarded as robust, long-lived and reliable.

About this variety

If you like trumpet daffodils but do not always want yellow, 'Mount Hood' is the variety for you. The flowers are large, with a strong trumpet and broad petals. As they open they show a soft creamy yellow that soon changes to a clear white. The variety was introduced in 1937 and is still one of the most popular white daffodils.

At around 35–45 cm tall and with sturdy stems, it withstands spring weather. In groups of 15 to 25 bulbs it looks calm and refined in the bed. As a bright accent it lightens shady woodland edges. Combine it with blue hyacinths, grape hyacinths or dark tulips; it also makes a lovely contrast with yellow daffodils. It is equally at home in containers on the patio.

In the vase it lasts a long time and is lightly scented. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. 'Mount Hood' multiplies willingly and forms strong clumps over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded position with free-draining, moist soil is ideal. Avoid places where water stands in winter. Groups look more natural than single rows.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers so that the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it turns yellow, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous; stand cut stems on their own first, as their sap harms other flowers in the vase.
