  • Trailing habit, ideal for hanging baskets
  • Double flowers in bright orange
  • Flowers from August to October
  • Stems about 45–55 cm long
  • For partial shade on balconies and terraces

This trailing begonia lets its stems fall loosely over the rim of hanging baskets and window boxes. Numerous double flowers in bright orange hang from them. A rewarding plant for partially shaded balconies that brings colour into October.

About this variety

Pendula begonias do not grow upright but trail. Their thin stems lean over the rim of the pot and carry many smaller, double flowers. In this orange variety they glow in a warm, clear orange that can be seen from afar. The leaves are narrow and pointed and form a loose green curtain.

The stems grow about 45–55 cm long, making the plants ideal for hanging baskets, tall pots, window boxes and the tops of walls. They look best in partially shaded spots with morning or evening sun. Blue lobelia, white bacopa or dark sweet potato foliage are good partners in the same box. Because the flowers hang downwards, they are best seen from below or at eye level, for example in a hanging basket next to a seating area.

The main flowering period is between August and October, or earlier if started early. They are only of limited use as cut flowers, but single stems last in small glasses. The flowers are unscented. If overwintered well, the tubers sprout again every year and become stronger over time.

Planting

From March, place the tubers in pots with the hollow side up and cover them lightly with soil. Stand them at a bright window at room temperature and water sparingly at first. As soon as there is no longer any risk of night frost, after the Ice Saints (mid-May), the plants can go outside. In the bed, keep a spacing of 25–30 cm.

Care

It is best to water in the morning and directly onto the soil, not over the leaves and flowers. Feed regularly from June to August. Faded flowers are easy to pinch out. When the first cold nights arrive in October, bring the plants indoors, let the foliage die back and store the tubers cool, dry and frost-free.
