This is a trailing tuberous begonia with double flowers in ivory white. Its stems fall loosely over the rim of hanging baskets and window boxes. An elegant, bright plant for shady balconies and seating areas.

About this variety

White trailing begonias look delicate and elegant. This variety bears many double flowers in a warm ivory white on its thin, trailing stems. The light green foliage is narrow and pointed and forms a calm background for the pale flowers.

With stems about 30–40 cm long, it is suitable for hanging baskets, smaller window boxes and pots on walls. It flowers best in partial shade and brings light to darker spots. Red or pink trailing begonias alongside create a lovely play of colour, and blue lobelia a fresh contrast. If a hanging basket hangs at eye level next to a seating area, you can see the fine double flowers best. In the evening especially, the white flowers stay visible long after other colours have disappeared in the twilight.

The flowers appear from July to October. It is only of limited use as a cut flower. The flowers are unscented. Eight tubers are enough for two or three hanging baskets, and if overwintered well they will sprout again next spring.

Planting

From March, place the tubers indoors in shallow trays of moist seed compost, hollow side up, and cover them only lightly. At 18–20 °C in a light spot they sprout after two to three weeks. After the Ice Saints (mid-May), plant the pre-grown plants outdoors 25–30 cm apart. A spot with morning sun and shade at midday is ideal.

Care

It is best to water in the morning and directly onto the soil, not over the leaves and flowers. Feed regularly from June to August. Faded flowers are easy to pinch out. When the first cold nights arrive in October, bring the plants indoors, let the foliage die back and store the tubers cool, dry and frost-free.
