  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Unscented, suitable as a cut flower
  • For sun and partial shade, hardy in Switzerland

White lilies bring calm and light to any bed. This white Asiatic lily flowers from June to August, is hardy and unscented. It glows even at dusk and is good for bouquets.

About this variety

White is the most versatile colour in the garden, and this lily shows why. The flowers stand out brightly against the foliage and seem almost to glow in the evening. As Asiatic lilies have no scent, it also suits places where a heavy lily fragrance would be disturbing, such as close to a seating area.

At about 90–110 cm tall, it belongs in the middle of the bed. In a white garden, it stands next to phlox, baby's breath and white foxgloves. But it also brings calm between strong colours such as purple or blue, for example next to delphiniums. At the woodland edge, it brightens dark corners, provided it gets enough light there. It is only moderately suited to pots.

In the vase, white lilies look elegant and simple. A few stems are enough for a bouquet with grasses or greenery from the garden. Remove the anthers to keep the white clean. Bees visit the open flowers, and the flowering period runs from June to August.

Planting

Plant in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set the bulbs 15–20 cm deep, roughly three times their height, 25–30 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot and moist, well-drained, loamy or sandy soil are suitable. Keep the base of the plants shaded with low perennials.

Care

Water in dry spells, especially while the buds are forming, and avoid waterlogging. Feeding with compost in spring is enough. Check regularly for lily beetles from the time shoots appear. Cut back the foliage only after it has yellowed; the bulbs overwinter in the ground. Lilies are poisonous to cats, including the pollen and vase water.
