'Robinsoniana' is an old and sought-after variety of wood anemone. Its flowers shimmer a pale lavender blue, the backs are grey-cream, and a ring of golden stamens glows in the centre. In April and May it forms a delicate carpet under trees and shrubs.

About this variety

'Robinsoniana' is considered a classic among wood anemones. The variety has been known since the 19th century and is often associated with the English gardener William Robinson, a pioneer of naturalistic gardening. Its flowers are slightly larger than those of the wild form and a pale lavender blue, while the buds and backs are a soft grey.

It is happiest in partial shade under deciduous trees and large shrubs, such as lilac or ornamental crab apple. The soil may be chalky, loamy or sandy, but should stay moist and humus-rich. Good companions include lungwort, hepatica and ferns.

For bees, the wood anemone is an important source of food in spring. In early summer the plant dies back and rests until the following year. If you appreciate subtle colours, you will enjoy this quiet, finely marked variety for a long time. A carpet of these flowers under trees is one of the quiet highlights of spring, precisely because it is so understated.

Planting

Plant the rhizomes in autumn, from September to November. Lay them horizontally about 5 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. A partially shaded spot with moist, humus-rich soil under trees and shrubs is ideal. The rhizomes should not dry out, so plant them soon after they arrive.

Care

Keep the soil moist in spring; in summer the dormant plant tolerates dry conditions. Instead of fertiliser, a layer of leaves or compost in autumn is enough. Let the foliage die back after flowering and disturb the soil as little as possible. The plant is hardy in Switzerland and needs no winter protection.
