Here you will find amaryllis bulbs for pots and vases. Plant the bulbs from October to January; flowers follow about six to ten weeks later.
What is sold as amaryllis is botanically Hippeastrum, from South America. The true Amaryllis belladonna from South Africa is a different plant. Hippeastrum comes in many forms: large-flowered varieties with four to six flowers per stem in classic red or white, double amaryllis such as 'Double Dream' or 'Nymph', bicoloured varieties with a fine edge such as 'Picotee', and Cybister types with narrow, spidery petals, for example 'Exotic Star'. A large bulb usually produces two flower stems.
Amaryllis is a houseplant and is not hardy in Switzerland. For flowers at Christmas, plant the bulb in early to mid-November; for staggered flowering, plant at intervals of two to three weeks until January. Place the pot somewhere bright and warm at 18 to 22 degrees. Once the flowers have opened, a slightly cooler spot extends the flowering period.
After flowering, cut off the stem but leave the leaves. From spring to August the plant keeps growing, happily outdoors in partial shade too, and should be fed every two weeks. From the end of August stop watering so the leaves die back. After a rest of about eight to ten weeks in a cool, dry place, repot the bulb in fresh compost and the cycle begins again.
Amaryllis is suitable for pots, arrangements with moss and as a cut flower, lasting up to two weeks in a vase. Waxed bulbs flower without soil or water but cannot be grown on afterwards. All parts of the plant, especially the bulb, are poisonous; keep it out of the reach of children and pets. For flowers in the garden, you will find other bulbs among our bulbs for autumn planting.
